“Mom, I have nothing to wear”

My pre-teen daughter needs a lot of fashion advice. Specifically, advice on how she could afford the trends with my meager budget for shopping and her allowance. Growing up, I had the same problem. I would always ask my mom for stuff we couldn’t afford.

My mom sat me down for girl talk over the fashion issue. She says that as women mature, their fashion choices become more and more functional. I always tell my daughter not to overdo her drive to be fashionable. Most trends are fleeting. I told her she’s better off buying items she would love until her dying day. This would allow her to save some of her money for items she would really covet.

I’ve also taught her a valuable lesson about boys. In my experience, they usually love simple-clothed girls, and excessive trendiness puts them off. Those chunky statement heels are probably not going to catch their eye as much as a vivacious, and open personality would.
So when my daughter asks to be dressed nicely, I am her number one supporter for the classic items.
